ReOrder planning guide

Safety stock for Shopify replenishment

Understand the purpose of a stock buffer, its cash cost and why a target service level is not a delivery guarantee.

Written and reviewed by ReOrder · · Examples are illustrative.

A buffer for uncertainty

Safety stock provides an allowance beyond expected demand. It can absorb some demand variation or supply uncertainty, but it ties up cash and cannot remove every shortage. Choose a policy that matches the importance of the item and the evidence available.

Review the tradeoff in units and cash

Illustrative example: adding ten buffer units at a unit cost of US$8 commits another US$80 before case-pack rounding. If the supplier only sells twelve at a time, the purchase can differ again. Review the final funded quantity rather than assuming the buffer directly equals the order.

Service levels are policy inputs

ReOrder supports service-level policies by demand-value ABC class. These are targets used in planning, not promises of realised availability. Sparse history, a major campaign or delayed delivery can invalidate an apparently comfortable buffer.

Revisit the policy when the business changes

Look at actual shortages, excess stock, supplier reliability and measured forecast errors together. Raising every product's buffer can hide a data or replenishment-process problem.

  • Check the assigned class and service-level policy.
  • Confirm lead time and supplier pack sizes.
  • Keep constrained cash visible in the final buy plan.
  • Review unusual demand and recorded stockout periods.

In the ReOrder workflow

Settings change future calculations immediately. Record why you change a policy and compare the plan before committing a purchase.
